Necklace 1.  components: antique Rajisthani silver, cornaline d'aleppo, red eye beads, white hearts, Ndali beads.

Rajisthan is in India,  known for its' high quality silver craftsmanship.  It is not uncommon to find jewelry from India, Yemen and other parts of the Middle East in East Afrika.  Trade between these regions has existed for thousands of years.  The cornaline d'aleppo (large red beads made with gold) are antique layered Italian glass beads traded mainly in West Afrika.  Red, eye beads of Italian origin,  are from a broken Oromo (Ethiopia) necklace worn by girls durjng their rites of passage.  White hearts, small red beads with white centers also Italian.  Ndali brass beads.  These are very plain, but interesting.  The Ndali are a traditional indigenous people of Tanzania.  These beads were were created during the late 29th, early 20th century from telegraph wire (source: Nimba Gallery, 1969).

  1. CONDITION:  As all of the components are antique and previously worn, there will be varying signs of wear and possibly damage.  Note that the large red beads, cornaline d'aleppo have chips in the glass on a couple of the beads.  One has an exposed yellow core.   The deep red color in yhese beads is attained by adding gold to the glass mixture during the molten process.  Many of these beads have white cores.  These are not as old as the yellow cores and do not have gold added to the glass mixture.  The large Rajisthani pendant is of very fine quality made of a higher grade of silver.  Antique traditional silver was produced prior to standardization, thus are not to be judged by the Sterling criteria of today.  The pendant is a heart shaped box, perhaps containing a prayer for good health/protection.
