Black Business Relief Fund Awardee #7: Kido Chicago

We Buy Black and SheaMoisture have teamed up to bring the culture the Black Business Relief Fund. After reviewing 3588 applications carefully, we have settled on 20 awardees, each who’ve been awarded a $5,000 grant. The seventh business is Kido Chicago, an excellent business that is totally worthy of this honor.

Kido is a children’s clothing company focused on uniting families and strengthening community. The company’s brick and mortar shop features apparel and a curated children’s book selection, all about inclusivity and representation. Kido Chicago hosts events and classes in their store that showcase different cultures and feature child educators and entertainers of color. They also host off-site events like their family day party and markets to bring people together, while being intentional about supporting other vendors. Kido is owned by Keewa Nurullah, a fourth generation entrepreneur who hopes to continue the tradition her great-grandfather started on Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Kido Chicago aims to put children of color at the forefront and to increase the offerings for families on the South and West sides of Chicago. Kido strives to connect families of color and encourages parents to live a full life, for their children. The company has an enduring commitment to always employ people of color and support other Black vendors. Kido is on a mission to inspire others to continue the strong history of Black entrepreneurship, using that as a tool to strengthen the Black community. Kido is keenly focused on children but recognizes that they are a byproduct of our community.

Kido has always provided parents and children with a great in-store experience but with the shutdown, that simply isn’t possible anymore. In order to weather the storm, the company is hoping to boost online sales and engagement, driving online traffic to their website and generating sales there. In addition, the company would like to purchase more products that families can use during this time of isolation: toys, puzzles and games border on essential, for families seeking to educate and entertain kids throughout the day. The $5,000 grant from We Buy Black and SheaMoisture comes at a critical time for Kido Chicago but also, for the families the business serves. It will go a long way to help further the mission of this great, Black owned company.
