There are several urgent cares around but it’s doubtful that many are Black owned and aim to reduce violence in Black communities. The Premier Health Urgent Care and OCC-Health Center recently opened on Chicago’s South Side and will offer affordable, quality care. In addition, it will donate a portion of profits to the Project Outreach and Prevention (POP) organization, which provides resources, services and education towards preventing youth violence.
Premier Health opened in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood. Adjacent to Hyde Park, Kenwood boasts several other notable Black residents, including the Obamas and Louis Farrakhan. Still, health care disparities are not uncommon there, as with many Black neighborhoods. Premier’s founding team includes board certified emergency medicine physicians Airron Richardson, MD, MBA, FACEP and Michael A. McGee, MD, MPH, FACEP and board-certified trauma surgeon Reuben C. Rutland MD, MBA, who is also a Navy Veteran. Premier Health was launched in partnership with Dr. Gregory Primus, former Chicago Bears wide receiver and the first Black person trained in orthopedic surgery at the University of Chicago.
Premier Health will offer the community a range of wellness, prevention and walk-in services for a wide variety of conditions. The center is located at 1301 E. 47th Street Building #2 Chicago, IL and receives patients Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Urgent care facilities have a critical role in our health care system. Doctor visits can sometimes take weeks to book while emergency rooms can be ill-suited for many minor illnesses. Urgent care centers fill those gaps and often do so at a significant discount relative to other treatment centers or hospitals.
Premier Health is yet another example of Black entrepreneurship that adds value to the community and provides a much needed service. Health is wealth and Premier’s business model is one that directly contributes to the overall quality of health and health care in our community. Further, they are committed to giving back and enriching the lives of our young people, as they profit in their business. The We Buy Black family wishes them much success.
