Black Woman Opens Hip Hop Spin Cycle Studio

New York City has an abundance of fitness classes but Briana Owens couldn’t quite find a home. She spent five years going to different spin classes across the city and as an avid cyclist, was still unable to find an experience that was by and for women who looked like her. There was a void in the market and rather than complain about it, Briana decided to step up and fill it. Today Spiked Spin is the intersection of wellness and hip hop culture and Owens has created the type of inclusive home she’d been looking for.

Spiked Spin offers hip hop cycling classes to energize you and elevate your mental tenacity, even beyond the bike. Their classes are filled with a diverse crowd of young women and men committed to getting their bodies and lives in the best shape possible. Spiked Spin classes cater to every level of experience, so long as you bring a 100% commitment to be your best. Spiked Spin offers flexible options ranging from monthly memberships to single classes. In addition, Spiked Spin offers fresh apparel for men and women to look their best, while working towards their best bodies. If you love hip hop and want to be pushed to be your best self, then Spiked Spin is for you.

The roots of Spiked Spin started with Briana wanting to create an experience specifically with women of color in mind, while still attracting a richly diverse customer base. Spiked Spin was truly a “response to the lack of diversity within the boutique fitness industry,” according to Owens. Getting the business off the ground required Briana to balance a full-time job in advertising, with her push to receiving a certification in spin. As a Queens native and alum of Hampton University, however, Owens had the focus and tenacity to see it through and today Spiked Spin is an emerging power in the cycling world.

Briana Owens is on a quest to create “generational health” through Spiked Spin. She is a proud HBCU alum, entrepreneur and most importantly, Black woman with a vision. Spiked Spin is a perfect blend of communal uplift and Black Wall Street. It is a medley of health and hip hop, perfectly intertwined. Check out Spiked Spin, today!
