Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo Georgia. He worked his way through UCLA. There, he excelled in sports, winning varsity letters in baseball, basketball, football, and track. He was the first athlete to accomplish such a major feat. By 1945, Robinson was playing with the Negro Baseball League. Although he faced a great deal of racism, he broke the color line in baseball when he donned the Dodgers jersey. By the end of his rookie season, Robinson had earned the title of Rookie of the Year. By 1949, Robinson had become the National League’s Most Valuable Player of the Year. After dealing with heart problems and diabetes, Jackie Robinson died on October 24, 1972, in Stamford, Connecticut. He was 53 years old.
