Kwanzaa is a special time of year that allows Black families to gather and reflect during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. While the holiday does not involve consumerism, one entrepreneur felt sad that she couldn’t find cute Kwanzaa clothes, pajamas, or even gift wrap for families who celebrate — so she created her own brand, Rosalva Elizabeth

“I love Kwanzaa and I want to encourage Black people to spend money with each other during this time of year,” said Rosalva Elizabeth owner Patreece Young. “That’s what Kwanzaa is really all about: working together and group economics.”

Rosalva Elizabeth’s first Kwanzaa collection includes a shirt or sweatshirt for each principle and wrapping paper for gifts with designs for each day. The apparel in the collection is available in various sizes so that the whole family can celebrate with matching attire. Even if your family celebrates Christmas or hasn’t celebrated Kwanzaa in the past, you can still swap out your old Christmas pajamas with Rosalva Elizabeth’s Kwanzaa styles. You’ll start a new tradition and teach your family some important lessons about Black culture and cooperative economics in the process.

“I think it’s important that we acknowledge our culture and that we express it proudly in any way we can,” Young emphasized, speaking about her inspiration for creating the collection.

Young named her business after her late maternal and paternal grandmothers who serve as an ancestral inspiration for her.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of community, family, and culture, established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African heritage. The holiday is celebrated on the week of December 26th – January 1st, and each day is attached to a principle.

The seven principles are Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

Kwanzaa is approaching fast and if you want to make sure your holiday season includes some Black culture, you need to order now. Visit the Rosalva Elizabeth site and place your orders by Dec. 18, 2021, to ensure you receive your items in time for the holidays.

“My favorite design is the Imani sweatshirt and tee. I love the way the design looks and Imani is the seventh principle whis is about faith and encouraging you to bring that spirit of faith into the new year with you,” Young said.
