Destination Crenshaw is the 1.3 mile “open air museum” that will feature permanent and rotating art exhibitions on Crenshaw Boulevard, along the light rail line that is currently under construction. Destination Crenshaw will be an enduring celebration of the of the Black community in South Los Angeles and Nipsey Hussle had long been part of its planning. The project will break ground on February 29, a fitting end to Black History Month.
According to Harris Dawson, who has been spearheading Destination Crenshaw, “Nipsey Hussle was in the earliest conversations about Destination Crenshaw. In fact, the very logo for the project that you see on all the materials and even the name of the logo was actually done by his team of graphic artists that work with the Marathon Store and they did that as a gift to Destination Crenshaw. He was one of the people to assert that Crenshaw ought to be a destination unto itself given the cultural dynamism and creativity that came out of that community.” Destination Crenshaw mattered to Nipsey Hussle, that is evident.
It mattered because there has always been a fight to erase Black people and culture. Destination Crenshaw will concretize and memorialize the people, faces and contributions of Black Los Angelenos. Destination Crenshaw is not only an attempt to bolster Black businesses but indeed, Black life in the area. On February 29 community leaders will gather at Vernon and Crenshaw to break ground on Destination Crenshaw. You can RSVP by clicking here. The program will begin at 2 PM local time on that day.
