Stores Sell Hats, This Black Designer Makes Crowns

Phil Knight created Nike with a singular focus, to expand human potential through footwear. In the fashion world, designers do a variety of things well but few focus on being the best at anything. Dungeon Forward is a Black owned corporation that designs the absolute dopest headwear this side of the universe. Dungeon Forward “crowns” are for the culture and by the culture, created for serious impact: to uplift, inspire, and tell stories of triumph, all through the wearing of crowns.

Dungeon Forward’s crowns are for a royal people, a statement of both innovative fashion and uplift. Hats can be found at the mall, but royals wear the best of crowns, from Dungeon Forward.

Dungeon Forward crowns push the limits of possibility, in headwear. Their most coveted crown, the “Sunika Kuraun”, is one of the most difficult pieces of headwear to manufacture on the planet. The Motherland (an ode to Africa) is a variation of the Sunika Kuraun and is their bestseller, to date. Designed by an architect, it’s constructed by hand with over 30 custom pieces and 10 different materials, in roughly 40 steps. This crown is the only– as in not another one anywhere — that features a patent-pending, double axis enclosure. This crown can adjust in two ways to better fit your head and it’s perfect for people with a lot of hair. This crown is the crown but it merely represents what Dungeon Forward consistently is: headwear for royals.

Dungeon Forward’s “Rise” crown is a special edition that masterfully weaves together headlines and landmark moments in Black History, creating sculptural homage to a relentless journey. “Rise” was designed to celebrate our origins with pride, remind the world of what Black people are made of and that the oppressed will always “Rise” up. Dungeon Forward represents consistent, advanced design and uncompromising quality. The company doesn’t use animal materials and also believes in giving back to the community. Dungeon Forward awards annual scholarships to students at Florida A&M’s (FAMU) architecture school. By 2023, the company plans to award scholarships at 40 HBCUs and will soon expand its HBCU product line, also.

David Castro is the design genius behind Dungeon Forward. David is a FAMU and University Of Miami (Florida) alum, where he studied architecture. Design was always a passion for David, and in many times out of necessity. His family didn’t have much money so he was forced to draw the fashions he couldn’t afford. In time he began painting on shirts, hustling them where he could. That led to developing a brand but when money got tight, he went to work full-time in architecture. The hunger never left, however, the passion to design never faded. As David grew in his craft, he eventually discovered where he excelled and what the world sees first: the head. Dungeon Forward is making crowns for royalty and doing it better than anyone else.
