Booker T. Washington most famous deed was founding the Tuskegee Institute in 1881 to train African Americans to become teachers and businessmen.  Later on, Mr. Washington created the National Negro Business League as a way for African Americans to help each other in business.

Obverse  Head:  The face of the famous educator appears with "Booker T. Washington" written below .  Booker T. Washington is also the first African American honor on a U.S. Silver Half Dollar.

The Silver Half Dollar was also designed by an African American Isaac Scott Hathway.
