This is a mixture of solar and standard wood burning (using sunlight + magnifying glass, and also an electric wood burning pen). Painted with various wood stains, and acrylic paint. Whole frame is lined with various crystals to add some positive energy to the negative reality this piece depicts. This is truly one of the most powerful and emotional pieces I've ever created. It is is my visual "state of the union address", a reflection of today's society and the reality of black life in America. It speaks to the injustice in hypocrisy in the "Land of the Free", a violent and brutal place where black people are either being shot up or locked up in disproportionate numbers. Top left represents police brutality and my people being used as target practice. The bottom half symbolized the millions of melanated people that are victims of mass incarceration. I surrounded it in crystals (amethyst around the boarders, also rose quartz, clear quartz and citrine on each of the four corners). The Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian) goddess Ma'at is burned on each of the four sides. This is my way of sending positive energy out into the world with prayers of love, peace, and healing, as I call on Ma'at to restore the truth, balance, and justice we so desperately need right now. Please understand that there is also a spiritual war going on, and the media is being used to instill fear and incite violence. Always remember that the frequency of love is one much higher than that of fear, so vibrate higher and don't let anyone steal your joy!! If you look closely in the eyes you will see a Sankofa bird. This is an adinkra symbol from the Akan people in Ghana, West Africa. It symbolizes our ancestors, and serves as a reminder to look to the past to help us move forward. We must speak their names and call on them for comfort, guidance, and protection in these trying times. Peace, love, and light to you all!!
