Nyame-The name comes from the Adinkra symbol of the “Tree of God” which represents God’s presence and protection.
Combination of wooden beads, flat sea glass beads, and hand painted beads all made in the Krobo Region with one lost wax brass bead made in Kumasi!
Glass Adornments is a marriage between the local artisans of the Krobo Region of Ghana right outside of the capital city of Accra and an inquisitive adventurer who wondered upon the brisk trade in Trade Beads that has existed for centuries!
Trade beads were historically used as currency across the vast ancient trade routes that led from West Africa throughout Asia and eventually Europe. Many countries around the world have their own version of Trade Beads that were permitted as a medium of exchange since so many countries didn’t have the coveted gold and salt to trade with at the time.
Krobo Glass Trading Beads are made today the same way they were 500 years ago and will never fade. These are meaningful, functional pieces of Ghanaian day to day life. They can be passed down for generations thereby introducing your loved ones to the story of Trade Beads.
The beads are hand painted in the Krobo Region of Ghana West Africa, then imported and designed into these beautiful limited editions in the United States. The business is an international partnership and 30% of all proceeds go back to the families of artisans who make them.
I trust you will find them and their story as amazing and interesting as we do.
