Dimensions: 20 in x 20 in (50.8 cm x 50.8 cm) Type/ Medium: Pyrography (Wood Burning) Surface: Oak wood Description: I created this piece to increase awareness, initiate conversation, and incite debate about colony collapse disorder (CCD) and the tragic/ mysterious decline in the bee population. The honeybee is responsible for a vast majority of the food we eat, and without them we couldn't survive. This environmental crisis has a huge impact on our food supply and our future. Please take the time to learn more if you haven't heard about it, and also support local beekeepers. (I'd highly recommend everyone watch the documentary Vanishing of the Bees) The background was burned into the wood using a magnifying glass and the light from the Sun. The lonely queen bee was burned using an electric wood burning pen. Collection: Spotlight on Society This is my social commentary expressed through solar pyrography (wood burning with sunlight). As an artist, part of my job I feel is to increase awareness, enlighten minds, and hopefully impact lives - that is my goal and the premise behind this collection. Through this body of work I hope to shed light on issues that bother me, but unfortunately are not being discussed enough (or at all). I hope people will enjoy the more, but more importantly meditate on the messages behind them.
